I just wanted to share a very big "thank you" to the
guys who were at the USS New Jersey yesterday, Friday, April
28th. As a former USS IOWA BB-61 sailor, I was totally
impressed at the condition of the ship and how well we were
treated. You guys are a class act and wish I lived close
enough to help with the maintenance and as a guide. I highly
recommend the tour of the ship to anyone, especially all
IOWA former crewmembers, as the Jersey is a carbon copy
of the IOWA in her layout and where the compartments and
work centers are located.17 years and it felt like I was
home again as if I'd never left. I love the battleships
and you guys should all be proud at what you've done with
her, she looks great! Thanks again. I'll post on the IOWA
website as well. Dan Burdette, former DC2,R-division USS

to present a plaque commemorating the first "mini" meeting
of the USS New Jersey Veterans. This was held in Champaign,

but would like to get the names of all of the 35 Veterans
who were there {Mostly WWII Veterans}. We would appreciate
receiving information from anyone who knows the names of
the veterans who were there. Please send info to the email

Is there anyone out there who would have the exact dates
the New Jersey was ported or within 12 miles of Korea during
our WestPac 1986 (May - Oct). I know we went to Inchon twice
and once to Pusan, but I don't have the exact dates. I know
we spent a lot of time off the coastline also, but have
no idea how long we were there. There is a Korean Defense
Service Medal authorized now for those who served in Korea
or within 12 miles of the coastline for 30 consecutive days
or 60 non-consecutive. Trying to find out how much time
we had in the eligible area. I could order a "deck log"
but that will take forever.

I was a proud member of King (K) Division from September
1952 until August 1953. My rich uncle afforded me an opportunity
to visit Korea during the spring and summer of 1953 (until
hostilities ended). Unfortunately, I departed the ship on
emergency leave and did not have the opportunity to say
good-bye or keep in touch with my shipmates. Although it
has been a long time since I departed the ship, I would
appreciate hearing from any K division shipmates from that
area. My time on the ship was very exciting. We visited
France, Guantanamo Bay, traveled through the Panama Canal,
stopped off at Long Beach, short visit to Hawaii, and then
high speed to Yokohama and to our final destination, the
Sea of Japan, off the coast of Korea. These were very exciting
times for the entire crew, we were finally putting our many
years of great training to use. If there are any members
from 'K' division that served during this period I would
like them to contact me.

Garrett Green, The dial you are referring to on the foremast
of ARIZONA was a range clock. This was part of an early
form of range and direction finding for the main battery.
I was in the Enlisted Personnel Office just aft of 4th Division's
berthing area - yea, it's quite a change from when we were
on board in the late '60's.

For those flying into and out of San Antonio for the
reunion in September, this may help when planning your flight
schedules. The association has contracted with Daisy Tours
to provide shuttle service between the airport and hotel
on September 5-6 and also September 10. After talking with
Daisy I calculated that if your flight arrives by 1630 on
September 6, you will have enough time to get to the hotel,
check in and make the Welcome Aboard party at 1845. When
departing on September 10, if your plane leaves no earlier
than 1400, you should have time to get to the airport, check
in and get through security to make your flight on time.
PLEASE BE SURE TO COME TO THE REUNION AND TALK IT UP AMONG
SHIPMATES YOU KNOW. LET'S DOUBLE THE 500 PEOPLE WE HAD IN
PENNSYLVANIA LAST YEAR!

Technical question. Maybe someone from WWII may know
the answer. On the Arizona, there was a dial on the foremast.
It was circular, it had 1 hand and there were letters on
that dial. It looks like it is the better part of 3' in
diameter. What was the dial used for? I had the opportunity
to visit the New Jersey last Sunday. First time I have been
onboard since I left in the summer of '69. Quite an experience.
Even though there are no longer berths in the 4th division
berthing area it was quite a feeling standing there. Thanks
for the help Garrett Green

you, I too am a Life Member of every military association
I belong to, and then some of you know that I am also a
Life Member subscriber to Military magazine. The April issue
of this fine publication will have a BOHAUSA publicity piece
in it (as below). As each of you are keenly aware, we are
gathering our last calls, the Class of 2006. This does not
mean an end to our work, "our thing," Taiwan's defense.
We'll still have a monthly newsletter and website presence.
But each of us has to reach out to those who haven't heard
of us. We are now larger than an ancient Roman legion (5,000),
we make "the difference" in the way Taiwan is perceived
in the United States. This was the dream Richard J. Feeney
and I envisioned and you, with your involvement, have made
it possible for the enlargement of that dream. Let me ask
every member, if you have clout with any association's you
belong to, their website's Guest or Comment pages, other
websites, or newspaper editors or columnists, ask if you
can get free placement of our publicity piece, will you
do so now, can you do it this weekend? After JUN 2006, some
well deserving Vets will come to us and we will be unable
to certify them. We've had a good run of these gatherings
and we really have pushed the envelope with the 13 TECOs
- far beyond the, what was to be, a one-time distribution
of the (40th. anniversary) Honor Medal for 823 Bombardment
(1958/1998). Let's hope we can get to that missing veteran
before the end of June 2006. Taiwan (Formosa), if you were

A Different Christmas Poem The embers glowed softly and
in their dim light I gazed round the room and I cherished
the sight. My wife was asleep her head on my chest My daughter
beside me angelic in rest. Outside the snow fell, a blanket
of white Transforming the yard to a winter delight. The
sparkling lights in the tree I believe completed the magic
that was Christmas Eve. My eyelids were heavy, my breathing
was deep, Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep. In
perfect contentment or so it would seem, so I slumbered
perhaps I started to dream. The sound wasn't loud and it
wasn't too near but I opened my eyes when it tickled my
ear. Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, then the
sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow. My soul gave
a tremble, I struggled to hear and I crept to the door just
to see who was near. Standing out in the cold and the dark
of the night, a lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.
A soldier I puzzled some 20 years old huddled here in the
cold. Alone in the dark he looked up and smiled standing
watch over me and my wife and my child. "What are you doing?"
I asked without fear. "Come in this moment, it's freezing
out here!" "Put down your pack, brush the snow from your
sleeve you should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve." For
barely a moment I saw his eyes shift away from the cold
and the snow blown in drifts. To the window that danced
with a warm fire's light. Then he siged and he said, "It's
really all right. I'm out here by choice. I'm here every
night." "It's my duty to stand at the front of the line
that separates you from the darkest of times. No one had
to ask or beg or implore me, I'm proud to stand here like
my fathers before me." "My gramps died at Pearl on a day
in December." Then he signed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram
always remembers." "My dad stood his watch in the jungles
of Nam and now it's my turn and so here I am. I've not seen
my own son in more than a while, but my wife sends me pictures,
he's sure got her smile." Then he bent and he carefully
pulled from his bag the red, white and blue--an American
flag. "I can live through the cold and the being alone,

My father, John J. Petrucco just passed away on Sunday
Nov. 27th. He was a proud ex-crewmember of the New Jersey
and had the opportunity to do some voluntary work on her
when she returned to Camden. He also took the tour after
she opened as a museum. We are not sure of the dates of
his service, but it was shortly after the end of WWII, so
late 40's. We also cannot locate his Navy discharge papers
but are working on it. Thank you. Nancy Kenny (daughter)

Hi Shipmates! I just discovered this site and it is very
very impressive! I served aboard BB62 from 1981 thru 1987
in X-3 division (a fresh air snipe-TV Tech). It was one
of the finest, and still is, times of my life. I see some
of the entries in the deck log of some familiar names, if
you would like to email me and talk about some of the "good
old days" please do. Big J is by far the most awesome ship
ever to serve in the US Navy! Talk to ya later! IC2 Dan

I am looking for anyone who served with my father on
the USS Hancock CVA 19 1952-1956. His name is Everett Stanley
Inloes. His nickname is Bert. His Rank SN 0032 seaman class
3. Service number 443 10 31. Some of his duties included
gun mount operator 5" 38 gunfire, assisting on the flight
line during aircraft operation. Anyone who remembers him
please contact me. My father has been denied benefits for
hearing loss. I feel his hearing loss is related to his
duties on the Hancock. He has no pictures or letters from
anyone to prove what he did on the Hancock. The examiner
did not review his naval personnel records and his title
of SN 0032 was unknown to the examiner. Please help if you
remember my father. Sincerely, Carol Leseberg

My name is Laura Keib. I am the youngest daughter of
Ernest R. Keib, who served on the New Jersey during WWII.
My family has been trying so hard to find ANY information
with regard to his naval service. When he passed away in
1987, he took with him all his stories and any information
on his time in the Navy and aboard his ship. We know he
received some medals and citations, but do not know which
ones, we also do not know if any of his shipmates are still
alive and if there are any stories they can tell us about
him, since he never spoke of his time in the service, nor
of any friends of his. Same goes for any photos of him that
his shipmates might be able to share with us. My father
died almost exactly 1 year before his one and only grandson,
Kurt was born. And his only son's daughters were both born
in the 1990's and never knew their grandfather. The only
grandchild that he ever got to know, was, of course, his
favorite (since she was his first and only at that time),
was Melanie, the first child of my middle sister Michelle.
Melanie was only 2 years old when her "Pa" died. My mom,
his widow Eleanor, passed away 3 years later. My sister
Michelle first found your website, just by chance, and told
me about it. And I thought that just maybe, your website
could help tell his children and grandchildren, any stories
or information about Seaman First Class (I believe), Ernie
Keib, who rests in peace, next to his wife at Resurrection
Cemetery in Justice, Illinois. Thank you so much. Laura

every 5 years probably all the world war 2 vets will be
gone.. and half or more of the korean vets will be gone
some of my shipmates i saw 3 years ago are not able to come
now..and in 5 years i myself will be pushing 79 and am not
in as good shape as i was 3 years ago..it has been good

Like many of you, I found out about this website and
USS New Jersey Veterans, Inc. and the annual reunions by
accident. This year I attended the reunion in Valley Forge
which included a visit to the ship, which looks pretty good.
The reunion was more than I ever dreamed. Spending time
with the WWII, Korea, Vietnam (my era) and Gulf War era
vets was an absolute joy. We were all brothers in arms and
we spent hours swapping sea stories and just enjoying each
other. One highlight was spending time with Admiral Snyder
and Captain Penniston (Vietnam era COs) who both attended.
I personally saw good friends I had not seen in 37 years.
Shipmates, it is up to ALL of us to keep this group alive
as long as possible. The WWII and Korean vets provide a
good chunk of the attendance. But WWII vets are dying at
the rate of 1,000 a day. I saw 70- and 80-year old vets
(even an elderly widow of a WWII vet) there in force. We
have around 1,300 members in this group but around 50,000
men served aboard Big J in her long proud history. There
are thousands of our shipmates out there who do not even
know this group or these reunions exist who would come at
the drop of a hat if they knew. But with the passage of
so many years, addresses and contacts are lost. The only
way we can grow this group is for EVERY crewmember to search
the internet, get out old contact information and CONTACT
any crew member you know. I have found many crewmembers
know of others and can contact them. If you DO have contact
with a crew member, I urge you to ask them to join the group
and update their contact information on the website and
above all to come to these reunions if possible. We had
so much fun you can't believe it. You are missing a great
time by not coming. If your shipmates you know belong, urge
them to come to the 2006 reunion in San Antonio, Texas and
you be sure and come too! We had around 500 people this
last time and many of those were family members of crew
who brought them and they also enjoyed themselves. PLEASE,
PLEASE do everything you can to grow and build this organization,
search out and contact other crew, and promote participation
in the reunions! Thanks!

I was a 5" Gunner's Mate onboard the Jersey from Mar.
1982 - July 1984. I recall serving with a 16" Gunner named
Ernie Hanyecz. Years later watching the news of the tragic
explosion onboard the USS Iowa, I saw the name Ernest Hanyecz
on the list of sailors killed and assumed it was the same
person I served with. While in Philadelphia a few months
ago and learning the Jersey was across the river, I took
a tour and learned of this website. I found the Taps page,
but did not see Ernie's name listed. I contacted Ed Campbell,
but nobody has been able to verify that the Ernest Hanyecz
killed onboard the Iowa is the same that served onboard
the Jersey even though the hometown listed on the Iowa website
is the same as in my cruise book. If anybody can verify
the Ernest Hanyecz killed onboard the Iowa is the same that
served onboard the Jersey, please let Ed know so Ernie can
have the honor he deserves of having his name posted on
the Taps page. Thank you.

Aug 26th there were only 3 of us registered for the upcoming

of our great Battleship, more of us will be needed to keep
this going. If you haven't taken a trip back to the ship,
it is as exciting as the first time you walked up the gang
plank, saluted the ensign and requested permission to come
aboard. Don't miss out on learning first hand from former
shipmates how are ship has grown. This is a fantastic voyage
to a perfect weekend. Don't miss out. Print off a reunion
reservation and mail it it to be a part of a very exciting

MORE INFORMATION FOR THOSE PLANNING TO USE THE R-6 TRAIN
WHEN ATTENDING THE SEPTEMBER REUNION!!! Shipmates, here
is the rest of the story on this connection. After leaving
the 30th Street Amtrak station, the SEPTA R-6 train travels
to several stops and eventually get to NORRISTOWN. HOWEVER,
there are THREE (3) NORRISTOWN stops!!! The first one is
the Norristown Transportation Center, the second is Norristown
Main Street, and the third is Norristown Elm Street. After
speaking directly with the Hilton General Manager, he advises
for us to make sure and stop at the FIRST STOP, THE NORRISTOWN
TRANSPORTATION CENTER and call the Hilton directly at 610-337-1200.
He advises that the shuttle will then come and pick you
up. The previous information on this topic was not 100%
correct and might have caused some of you some aggravation.
I thought it best to give you the straight information so
your trip will be as smooth as possible. See you at the
reunion.

visited the Big J last summer. It brought back a lot
of memories. Was in OI division June of 82 through Feb 84.
Was hoping to find a copy of the comic strip Sammy the Unsat
sailor that circulated in the ships paper. I do have a VCR
copy of battleship rock along with other footage. The pic
is okay and i may get it enhanced. Not too many ships have
50 year worth of vets that served on it. Which makes her
and her sister ships unique!

Hi, this is EM2 Chris Miller. I served on the Jersey
from 1982 to 1984. ( That wonderful deploy to Lebanon).
I just found out about the reunion for 80's E Division next
year. I must apologize to some of you because I will be
there. I would not miss it. I am looking forward to seeing
the guys that shared some of the best times I ever had.
(I am sure there were some bad times, I just blanked them
out)

George T.Miller (and all you other Iowa-class advocates!)
"serious consideration" has indeed been given to reactivation
from both the GAO and the USMC. In fact, this month's Marine
Corps Gazette has a three page article advocating for the
return of the Iowa & Wisky to plug the dangerous fire-support
chasm left by the Iowa's premature decommissionings without
any adequate replacements. Those leading the charge are
the folks at "www.USNFSA.org" of which I'm a member, give
them a look and your support, our Marine's deserve better

thanks George for your input.. she was a great ship to
severe on I was aboard from 1953 to Sept 1955.. I never
met a nicer bunch of sailors.. she was a ship any one would
be proud to serve aboard.. and I understand she is the 3rd
in line to be called back into service if needed..I understand
the USS Wisconsin in Norfolk,VA is in the ready now to be
the first to be called back into service.. you can go aboard
her but you can't go below decks.. it makes me proud when
I hear some one say thank you for serving ..when I went
to the reunion in Las Vegas a boy about 20 years old came
up to me and shook my hand and said thank you for your service
in the past..that made my day.. thanks again.. samuel flener

Hello ... I had the opportunity for the 1st time last
('04) summer to visit the USS New Jersey in Camden. To say
the experience was awesome, would be an understatement.
I have so much respect and admiration for all the men who
served onboard Big J from WW II until the most recent decommissioning
in '91 ... (Sadly) with all that has gone on around the
world since 9/11/01, I find it hard to believe that no serious
consideration has been given (to my knowledge) to reactivating
the USS New Jersey. Peace through Strength is a necessity,
and I could not think of a stronger presence in hot spots
around the globe that to have the "Firepower For Freedom"
capability of the battleship at the ready to "hear the call, when
sounded again" ... May God Bless the former crew members
of Big J for their sacrifices and service to the country
... George.

The Iowa class book is coming along nicely. I am still
looking for some key photos of my favorite ship (BB62 of

I need a good photo of the Zuni Chaff launchers amidships.
I also have some photos I need your crew to look at because
I don't know what the heck I'm looking at in the main tower.
I'll scan them and send them to you. So put the word out
to your group if you would, I need a photo of the Zuni's.
I also would still like a hi-rez copy of that great overhead

81-84, what a time that was. Was an HT2 in R-Div and worked

remember the 16" firing in the yellow zone? LCDR Messina

If anyone can give me information about E, I would appreciate.
I went aboard the New Jersey in Camden when it was opened

Hello: I recently bought a book that has some fabulous photographs
of Navy and Marine men of World War II. The book has some
wonderful photographs of men on the New Jersey in 1944-45.
I am a WW II buff. As I don't think you all would have reason
to buy or know about this book, (it is a little esoteric)
I thought I would take it upon myself to alert vets groups
about the existence of these photographs. I am asking you
to forward this information to any WW II Battleship New
Jersey veterans. They may be surprised with the discovery
of some very old memories. I don't think very many of these
pictures have ever been published. I think a picture could
be ordered from the National Archives. I think such a photograph
taken at that time would be quite an heirloom. The book
is "At Ease -- the Navy men of World War II." Please see
if you can contact anyone that can forward this information
to a helpful person. Thomas R. Williamson Dep. Public Defender

My Dad best friend served aboard the Big “J” during WW
II, he was a First Class Carpenters Mate (Paul P. Asher).
When he came home, he gave me a picture of the Big “J” and
for about 40 years, I cherished that picture until someone
broke into my office and took it. He also gave me the Log
Book. Which I go through once in awhile, and as I look at
the pictures of the crew from the different division that
served on it during WW II. I think to myself if it were
not for them and all the other service men that served this
country, we would not be living in the greatest country
in the world today. When the ship made a call to San Francisco
after it was re-commissioned, I took my son to see it. It
was huge to him and it was bigger than any DD or DE that
I spent two weeks a year on, while I was in Navy Reserve
(1955-1963). To all the survivors that served aboard the
Big ”J” during WW II, and all the other conflicts that she
spent serving our country. I would like to say thank you
for a job “Well Done”, and God Bless. Bob Castaneda (SK3)

I am not a former crew member but I am a retired shipfitter
of the now deceased Long Beach Naval Shipyard who spent
many long hours constructing varied assemblies on board
the Big J. I was in shop 11 in the structural group and
fabricated many structural items but most notably I built
the CIWS deckhouse on day shift and John Hepner carried
on, on the swing shift. 3/4" HTS ,30.6 lb plate bulkheads
and overhead and under the interior padding I welded my
initials,EJK, and it is there for all time. My pops, John
Koczwara was one of the keel layers of the Big MO at the
Brooklyn Navy Yard so we seem to be a BB family. I did go
on shakedown cruises and experienced the awesome power of
the speed and even the firing of the 16 and 5 inch batteries,
a great experience only had by a lucky few. Not the typical
Yardbird, I also worked her as a member of SIMA, a reserve
ship support unit in the Navy Reserve in Long Beach, now
killed by evil politicians too. Even better I was born and
lived in Wallington and Clifton , New Jersey before moving
to Hunting Beach ,Cal in 1959. I served on the HORNET CV-12
on active duty and can only imagine being on board the NJ
as a crew member. I am glad the NJ is alive and not a bunch
of cheap import cars and hope to see her re-activated with
a pair of Nimitz class CVN Nuke plants powering her for
the next 50 years .Long live BB-62!

my grandfather's funeral which I am proud to say that myself
and my cousin (who was in the marines), were both in our
dress uniforms and were invited to be apart of his military
honors, they let us do the 21 gun salute, which made my
grandmother very happy, along with the rest of the family.
Anyways again, thank you for responding, it meant a lot
to me that someone out there cares enough to help out a
fellow trooper. Sincerely Dennis Bushnell US Army 82nd Airborne

Hi, If anyone has any information on my father, who is
deceased, please let me know. He served on the USS New Jersey
during WWII in 1943 in the Eighth Division on the I think,
20 mm's. He was injured along with Cosse and both men received
a Purple Heart. His name was Herbert E. (Gene) Lindley Sr.
I need to find out the reason he was awarded the Purple
Heart and any other information on his and his job duties
would greatly be appreciated. Thanks for your help.

My grandfather server aboard the USS New Jersey, all
I know about is it was during WWII he passed away and myself
and my cousin did his military honors, that was when we
found out the most about him being in WWII, if anyone reading
remembers Clyde Gill Bushnell, I would appreciate anything
you could send me about what he did, his rank, etc. or even
any pictures he may be in, I would be so grateful to anyone
who could fill me in. Sincerely, Dennis Bushnell US Army,

It is with deep sorrow that I announce the passing of
my father, Donald(Frenchy)Gervais on January 5. We sent
him back to the Lord on his 75th birthday, January 10. Dad
was very proud of his service on the USS New Jersey, and
I experienced it first hand when I brought him down to the
reunion in Sept 2002, and with tears in our eyes, we held
hands and stepped aboard this beautiful lady together. We,
his family, extend our sorrows to all his shipmates. Please
take a moment, wherever you are, on April 2 at 10:00 am
when we will lay him to rest with full Military Honors,
and give him one last salute. God Bless You All, forever

This is an great website, it really brings back memories.
I served onboard NJ as a Radarman, now called Operations
Specialist, (OI Division) during the Viet Nam era, from
before she was recommissioned until just a few weeks before
decommissioning. Life long friendships were formed, and
with these friends I had the opportunity to see and do things
that I might never have been able to do. It was an awesome
experience that I wouldn't trade for anything. One thing
about Battleship sailors in general and NJ sailors in particular,
we might have had times when we fought among ourselves,
but we would never let anyone else pick on our shipmates.
We were, and still are, truly a crew of proud and dedicated
Battleship sailors.

damage was the boat boom was made into a pretzel afterwards,
and with a little paint, things were Ok except for the boat
boom. We had zodiac's aboard Iowa and we were playing with

Hi guys-- I was aboard the Big J from June, 1983 (when
we left Long Beach) to October (when we were off Beirut).
I was the PACE Instructor for most of that time, though
when we arrived off the Lebanon coast, I didn't teach--I
was a sort of unofficial morale booster at the request of
the Exec. Some of you may remember my daily cartoons I posted
on my stateroom door--or the times I was the "man overboard"
that no one could find. I just discovered the BB62 organization
and would very much like to become involved. It was definitely
an "A" ride, wasn't it? I would love to hear from any one

As a proud member of her 1982 Re-Commissioning Crew,
This site brings back a lot of memories, Most are happy
but some are sad, as that fateful day of the coast of Beirut.
It invokes a sense of sadness and loss of a graceful Lady
from the active forces of the US Surface Fleet. The time
I spent serving her, shaped my naval career in the most
positive way. I can not describe the proud I felt in just
seeing her and knowing I was part of something special.
I will admit I had tears in my eyes as I walked off the
brow when I transferred. She now deserves the best each
of us can give her. To her I say Thank You for the ride.

Hey, Larry: Thanks for your prompt reply. BTW, I am retired
USNR with WW II and Korean War service. I volunteer at my
local public library, helping with their used and discarded
book sale operation. These two books were discarded by the
library and I bought them. I had planned to try to sell
them on eBay, but it occurred to me that there might be
somebody who deserved to have them. I have been looking
for a copy of the USS Leyte (CV-32) shakedown cruise book
without success, so I know the feeling. Send me your zip
code and in a day or so I'll email you to tell the cost
of mailing by USPS media rate. If the amount is OK with
you, I'll mail them and you can send me a note verifying
that you have put that amount in your New Jersey Veterans'

mention that I'm looking for the above Leyte Cruise book,
I'd appreciate that. Glad to help out. /s/ Fred
