Hello. I must say I am so proud to have found this
site. As a spouse of a crew member I remember standing on
a pier and watching the ship sail off 'til she couldn't
be seen any more. I also remember the young faces that lined
the railing and my husband was one of them. There were friends
that my husband had that we lost touch with. My husband
was a gunner mate. A couple of his buddies were Ben Casner
and Don Reed . He served on the New Jersey from the time
she was re-commissioned in PA thru Panama Canal and on to
Long Beach, Then on to the WESTPAC Tour and back.
if you guys are out there or any one that remembers him
please contact me. His Birthday is coming up and I
would love to be able to surprise him. I am giving you my
E-Mail. He doesn't like computers. Thanks and God Bless
you all. Debbie Evans

I was one of the first enlisted men to report aboard
the New Jersey 1950. I was a storekeeper1c and was assigned
to the S division. I was in charge of general stores and
all of those store rooms. We worked on the New Jersey in
the day time and slept on an aircraft carrier (which was
in moth balls) at night. Commander Strock was the Supply
Officer and Lt. Gilbert was the Exec. officer. These two
Officers were the ones I reported too. I saw no one else
that day aboard. This was in Bayonne New Jersey. After being
commissioned & a shake down cruise we headed for the South
Pacific. We sailed up & down the coast line bombing targets
given to us by the spotters. One thing I will never forget
was when we sailed into Wonson and dropped anchor. We fired
star shells all night and got no response from the Koreans.
Next morning it broke loose. The Koreans started firing.
We were setting ducks. We had to pull anchor to get under
way. One man was killed others injured.

Great Site, thanks for the memories!
EM3, Distribution shop, May 89 to Feb 91.
Does anyone have a copy of the poem that was written
on the back of the EPCP in #3 engine room? Did it get replaced?
Unfortunately, during the "lay-up" process one of the new
guys from the electrical distribution shop "erased" it while
cleaning the switchgear.
It should also be noted that the ship was de-commissioned
for the last time in Long Beach, CA, not in Bremerton, WA
as the history says.

My friend, Jeff Hoover, a fellow battleship sailor started
a list, I added to it! Remember, this is purely for fun
:)
A little crude but this is how we remember it...
1> Buy a dumpster, paint in gray and live in it for 12
months.
2> Perform a weekly disassembly and inspection of your
lawnmower, car, dishwasher, and washing machine.
3> On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays turn your water
temp up to 200 degrees. On Tuesdays and Thursdays turn it
down to 10 degrees. On the weekends inform your family that
they used to much water during the week, so all showering
is secured and they are on water hours.
4> Raise your bed to within 6 inches of the ceiling and
place a sharp edged fluorescent light directly in line with
the bridge of your nose.
5> Walk around your car for 4 hours, checking the tire
pressure every 15 minutes.
6> Repaint your entire house once a month.
7> Use 18 scoops of budget coffee grounds per pot and
then allow the pot to sit for 5 hours before drinking.
8> Sew your back pockets to the front of your pants.
9> For the MM's..leave the lawn mower running in your
living room 12 hours a day at full throttle with the heater
on at full blast.
10> Every so often, throw the cat in the pool and shout
"Man overboard, starboard side" Then run into the house
and sweep all the pots and dishes off the counter. Yell
at the wife and kids for not having the kitchen "Stowed
for sea".
11> Set your alarm clock to go off at random times during
the night..Jump up and get dressed as fast as you can making
sure to button the top button of your shirt and stuff your
pants into your socks...Run out into the backyard and uncoil
the garden hose. (Have your family time you...just for fun)
12> Invite twenty strangers over to dinner, serve bad
food and have them all talk at the top of their lungs and
laugh hard while slapping the table.
13> Buy fourteen boom boxes and play various ethnic music
in the bedroom.
14> Keep at least one mesh laundry bag full of your skankiest
dirty socks and underwear hanging no more than two feet
from the head of your bed.
15> Have your kids walk on the edge of your bed twice
a day with dirty feet or better yet, wet soapy feet from
the shower.
16> Store all of your laundry in a big bag half wet before
wearing.
17> Get a hideous crew cut before your dumpster trip.
18> Have your wife whack the side of your bed and shine
a bright flashlight in your eyes every night at midnight.
19> Keep boxes with the sorriest balogna sandwich ever
and unbelievably old apples, don't forget the obligatory
boiled egg. This is to be eaten with a carton of powdered/irradiated
soy milk.
20> Tell your boss that you refuse overtime pay and that
you'd be glad to work eighteen hour days for the next six
months for virtually free.
21> Take a stinky bus to down town Tijuana every day
and consider this seeing the world stuff as the neatest
thing.
22> At least once every six months, drink so much alchohol
that your kidneys hurt for the next six months.
23> Run like a madman to meet the mailman. Don't worry,
there aren't any bills in the mailbox, just letters that
smell like perfume!
24> Get at least one lazy boss that acts like a snarling
grizzly bear until he has at least two pots of the aforementioned
coffee in him.
25> Drink the aforementioned coffee from the same cup.
Never wash it and take great pride in the one inch crust
built up inside it!
26> Print your name on the outside of all of your clothes.
27> Stencil your job title and pay level on your shirt
sleeve.
29> Go park your family car all the way across town for
six months in a K-mart parking lot. Yeah, sure it'll be
ok and start when you go to get it!
30> Keep at least one set of clothes and shoes perfectly
ironed and polished and only wear them one time for thirty
minutes every six months to show your boss.
31> Go ahead, scratch yourself anywhere, anytime. It's
ok, go ahead.
32> Get rid of cable, cut down the antenna. Watch the
same tape of "Three's Company" forty two times in a row.
33> Have your kid video tape every thing that went on
in the house and stick his head out the door to tell you
the weather.
34> If you ever drive south of Magic Mountain, dress
like a pirate, drag your wife and kids out of the car, beat
them with firehoses, drag them through weeks of saved up
garbage, make them bark like dogs for hours while wearing
all of their clothes inside out and backwards, make them
eat cherries from the belly button of a fat man and give
them a card showing that they are indeed salty.
35> Every trip after this, stop OTHER peoples cars so
that your wife and kids can do the same thing to other people.
36> On the coldest, rainiest day of the year, get the
whole family dressed up in their finest clothes and line
up on the sidewalk for four hours.
37> Have the local Sheriff's dept. charge through your
house with their guns a couple of times each month. If you
don't hold still, have them knock you down.
38> About once every six months, have payroll lose your
check just before vacation.
39> When you go to the dentist or doctor, request the
most junior know nothing dentist or doctor. Better yet,
just settle for the gardener.
40> Work every single day for the next year. Take a month
off and do it again.
41> Have your boss walk in and trip all of the units
at any time while yelling various problems in your ear.
Handle it.
42> Have the local stores have a humongous sale on everything
in the store, right after your vacation when you have no
money.
43> Stand around in a circle in that living room with
the heater and lawnmower with your family for twelve hours
a day. Don't forget your coffee. No sleeping, and don't
sit down. Every eight hours, clean the house.
(Editor's Note: This is
amusing, if you've been to sea. Some may find it...a
little crude? It is not our intention to offend anybody.

MM2 on from '81-84. Did the whole Beruit cruise, no leave
home. Loved like hell subjecting proud Marines to the denigrations
of shellback day! (they took it really well) Favorite moments;
how fantastic the Capn' Crunch was that Brian Mallow brought
back with him from the states, How fantastic it was to touch
Julie Hayek, Miss USA. To dance with Cathy Lee Crosby in
the Bob Hope show (boy was I nervous as heck!) Being the
first off the ship during the dependent's cruise (this is
a special thing to do when you're a snipe!) The ship wide
cheer that went up when we actually bombarded the Shiites.
Grabbing cookies off the tables on the way to GQ. The time
I almost died of heat prostration from cleaning the exhaust
ducts in #1 engineroom and living! (You should've SEEN how
bad sickbay and the Corpman's whites looked after hauling
my sorry butt up there!) The fantastic tours in Italy and
Israel. The beaches in France! Watching Chief Ogledzinski
(where the heck are you Chief?) and Phil Bradac wrestle
around in #1 engine room. Being in charge of the firewatches
in the yards and running alllll over the ship checking it
out. (It's really scary to stand up on the very very top
of the tower up there on the super structure, I wish I'd
had a camera up there!) Going out on that rainy night and
watching Herman the German pick up and move the Spruce Goose
to the barge. Drinking for free when we hit Long Beach.
Manning the rail when we pulled into Pearl Harbor. (not
a dry eye on the ship) Hauling ass over to Beruit at days
and days of full speed. Being able to buy so much cool stuff
from the ships store. (I bet we all kick our own ass after
seeing the real prices of all this stuff when we got back
and you didn't buy enough ship's memorabilia didja!) That
utterly fantastic food Christmas '83! Remembering how marvelous
Ann Jillian looked after all those months at sea. Lastly,
being called a Battleship Sailor and being able to say I
served on the most decorated warship ever!
Least favorite: That long, long, long cruise! Having
to spend a four hour GQ in someone else's boondockers because
they took mine (how in the heck they fit in boondockers
three times smaller than theirs, I'll never know) Getting
emergency recalled when you held tour tickets to Egypt.
Making second class just to have EN1 Brown (that's Tiny
to you that remembered this great man) knock my ass half
way across the messdecks by tacking my crow on. Standing
in that zillion degree heat forever hugging the blower.
Having to paint out our section of broadway because an Admiral
found my tupperware cup in the OBA locker (I bet Mallow's
cracking up remembering that!) Working a zillion hours at
the warehouse receiving stores for M-div for all of those
months.
The good memories definitely out weight the bad. Shoot
me an email!

Super site befitting a great ship. I served on the Big
J during her first tour in Korea - 1951. I was in the ships
band - better known as "The Jersey Kats". We were ammo loaders

And then we did our music for the crew, other ships along
side and dignitaries that came aboard. Jim Perino and I

Hey guys I was on the old lady from 88 to decom. I was
just reading through and remembering going through the mine
fields in the straits, Christmas in Singapore. I remember
the outstanding 2 months we spent in Australia getting toasted
with Captain Katz, what a great time that was. I was BTOW
IN #2 Fireroom for about 2 and a half years I had the best
watch team on Broadway, Parks, Stewart, Hinojos, but for
the life of me I can't remember my lowerlevelman and pumpman.
I remember pulling in from 2 deployments and seeing 63 tied
up as usual to the pier, and feeling real proud of our BATTLESHIP
and in my opinion the best BATTLESHIP. On Decom. I was the
last BTOW To steam a boiler which was #4 Boiler and if I'm
not mistaken #3 was the one before that. I was there when
we put the pad lock on the port side hatch for the last
time. Everyone in #2 Fireroom left they're name on the side
of the DFT. I sure hope that someday I get to see it again.
I'll shut up now if there is anyone out there that remembers
me please write me and if you don't know me but served on
her write me also.

look for the site across the river in Camden where USS New

I served onboard in number one engineroom from 1984 to
decom. I was probably the only MM to shoot the 16 inch guns
and steer the ship. At one time or another I met everyone
onboard that ship from every department. Guess everyone
remembers the cook that looked like Popeye. Or running over
a whale, backing up into the pier (new driver), Green peace
in Portland (new paint job), Australia (yippee), Many fuel
oil leaks in number one engine room (they finally got fed
up with it and had me tie a rag around the pipes and let
it just drip into a bucket) bubble gum and bailing wire
throughout the ship, the Christmas star on top of the ship
in Long Beach, MM2 Honchell giving his tour in the Engineers
(old locomotive train style) cap to the press, hauling ammo,
the battleship drag races, boring night watches, shellback
initiations, cadet training, wiped out bearings and blown
packing glands, the 16 inch gun scare for what happened
to the Iowa, Going through the Persian gulf at General Quarters
because of mine fields, K-Rations for everyone, the cook
that looked like Popeye, Stealing steaks from the galley
and cooking them on the Main Engine, 5 gallon tubs of ice
cream also, showers down in the engine room and boiler rooms
during water rations, log room waxing parties, grease parties,
swim days, training, Christmas in Singapore (cleanest city
we ever been in), Marines knocking themselves out on the
Rail going down Broadway during Security Alerts once a week,
Fire drills, and more.

'82. I was in OI division and 1 of 2 air controllers onboard.
Consequently, I did not get relieved during our 11 month,
16 day deployment. I was South Plotter during our bombardment
into the Becca valley, which destroyed the side of the mountain
and a renegade band of Shiite's. Proudest time of my career
was serving in USS NEW JERSEY!

I had the privilege of serving aboard the Black Dragon
(Big J) 53-54 R Division. Put in for a swap and got it.
The best move I made in the Navy. It was a great ship and
crew and my fellow mates in the R Division were the greatest.
I sure miss those days wish I could somehow go back. What
an experience! It broke my heart when she was struck from
the Navy ships. I think she still could be of great use
to the surface forces. What ship could do what she did?
Hat's off to the most decorated ship in the history of the
United States Navy.

81-85 M-Div #4 Engineroom (EMO3) I see a lot of names
that I remember, having trouble putting faces to those names.
But the Great Lady that we have in common will forever be
in my mind. But I do remember Mallow and his cheesy mustache.
And Master Chief Gambettas gravely voice. He is sorely missed.
Drop me a line if you can.

Tommy (TJ) Broussard - FM Div '88-'90
Glad to see we finally have a place to catch up with
old ship mates and remissness about our days on the "Big
J."
I was a SPOT 1 FC for almost 2 years. Nothing like the
011 Level - Sleeping smoke watches, marathon sprints from
the Mess Decks for unannounced GQs, 9-gun broadsides knocking
Con Boxes off the Bulkheads, hours of Stack Gas Suffocation,
and those delightful deck watches whizzing in my deck drains
during the mid-watch.
If any of my old 16"-FM Div FC podna's are out their,
give the "crazy Cajun" a holler.

I was on the new jersey in 5th division from November
1985 to April 1988. I was a deck hand. my condition 3 duty
was 5 inch gun mount on starboard side. I was Hot Case Man
for awhile, I also was Powderman. I miss the New Jersey
a lot. I enjoyed being there. I guess what I enjoyed

Hi, This is a very well done web site, I'm impressed.
I served aboard the Big J during re-commissioning during
the Korean War from Dec.1950 'til July 1953. I was in S-2
div. as an SKSN assigned to Spare Parts Store Rooms for
about 5 months then I was transferred to the 5th Div. and
assigned the Ship's Paint Locker. Since there was no competition
for the "paint locker" I spent the rest of my time there.
My GQ post was #1 5" mount. Let me hear from shipmates who
served with me. It was a very Proud time in my life to serve
aboard the "JERSEY".

appreciated. And this is a great sight. GM1 (SW) Steven

I need some help with a project I am working on and I
cannot seem to find the answer anywhere on the net or in
any of the books I own. Exactly which battleships belonged
to which BATDIV (1 through 5) in 1940? Which was the Flagship
of each BATDIV at that time? I know PENNSYLVANIA was Flagship
of the US FLEET and CALIFORNIA was Flagship of the PACIFIC
FLEET but did they usually operate with a specific BATDIV?
Thanks for the help up front. Andrew Fraize

Hi,
Thought everyone would be interested to know that the
Navy has revisited BB62's service record at the request
of the Home Port Alliance, the group restoring her. They
have added 3 more campaign stars to her ribbons bringing
the total to 19 stars.
The story is in Courier Post dated 5/14

anyone would like a copy, I would be glad to pass them along.
Anybody know how to contact CWO Jim Palladino or Lt. Paul

At 19 years of age my midshipmen summer cruise aboard
BB-62 was the experience of a lifetime. Now my 19 year old
son is approaching the summer after his first year of college.
If only he could work with and learn from the outstanding
guys I met in the summer of 1969, out in the Pacific sun,
holy stoning the deck, scraping paint, and shining shoes
... sure, but also accepting responsibility for watch duty,
manning the 5 inch gun and learning to be an adult in the
company of honorable men. He should be so lucky.

X Division - 68-69 - PN3. Does anyone have an extra New
Jersey decal of the ship's seal (68-69) which they can part
with? I have traded vehicles and don't have one to put on
my jimmy. These aren't available anymore from the reunion
group (HINT, HINT, HINT - GET BUSY, GUYS!!!) or anyone else
that I have been able to find. If I can't round up one from
elsewhere, I might have to start producing them MYSELF!!!
This decal is the ship's seal (oval) with the turret and
below, the liberty bell. It was colored. Any help would
be appreciated.
