I reported to NEW JERSEY in January 68 in Philadelphia.
Served until June 69. Left ship in Seattle during midshipmen
cruise to place USS DETROIT AOE4 in commission in Bremerton.
Was able to attend decommisioning ceremony in Bremerton.
It seemed to me like a relative had passed away. I saw a
lot of tears that sad day. I worked in the M Division office
with CWO2 Gary Blanchard. I was an MMCS then and the LCPO

I wanted to tell everyone who served in NEW JERSEY during
her Viet Nam era as well as her recommissioning about a
wonderful shipmate. He was FTCM Albert GAMBETTA. He was
the Command Master Chief during pre-com and after she was
recommissioned with missiles and he served aboard her during
the VN deployments as a fire controlman. As many of you
know he was diagnosed with throat cancer while still aboard
the ship in Long Beach. He was allowed to travel to Balboa
almost daily for chemo and radiation treatment. He was medically
disabled and retired to his home in Winlock, WA. I kept
in touch with him and his wonderful wife. About 6 years
ago he was diagnosed with colon cancer after he had gone
5 years w/o any more problems with throat cancer. It finally
took him and he was and is missed by all of us who knew
him. Anyway, I just wanted to share this with you because
I know many of you knew him. Andy

I was looking for a cruise book from 55-57 for the New
Jersey. First I want to say Thank you so much to everyone
that emailed me with information, you all have been so nice
and helpful...thank you again. A gentleman that was on the
New Jersey has sent me his 1955 cruise book to look at.
Can anyone tell me if there ever was a 56 or 57 cruise book
that anyone can remember? I was looking for a copy for my
father if there ever was one... If 55 was the only year
in that time frame a cruise book was produced maybe it will
bring back old memories at least....thanks and Merry CHRISTmas

I was an FTG1 assigned to FM Division. Just prior to decom
I was transferred to the USS Saint Paul CA-73, which was
in drydock at Long Beach Naval Shipyard. Reporting aboard
the "Fighting Saint", as a (somewhat cocky) 24 year old
First Class Petty Officer, I found my way down to the Weapons
Office; being assaulted by the din of air hammers, needle
guns and grinders; tripping over hoses, and choking on sand
blasting dust. When I met my Division Officer he asked me
what I thought of the ship, to which I replied; "I am not
impressed". He then asked; "Don't those big guns on the
main deck impress you"? I must admit that my reply was rather
smug but I couldn'd help myself when I said to him; "I just
came off a Battleship, those eight inch are not big guns".
The look on his face was priceless.

I was a member of New Jersey and was part of the final
decommisioning crew. What a sad day that was. Prior to that
on the final tour we did a little cruise up the west coast
what a thrill. It seemed as every one knew it was the Big
J's final finale. We did the Portland Rose Festival that
year and had lines of people that stretched, it seemed like
forever just to walk on her decks. then that was all over
and we were off to the ship yards for decom. The persian
gulf Heated up and so did Capt. Tucker. He was off to washington
to persuade them to put New Jersey back together and get
her underway to the Gulf. However his efforts failed and
the decom went as planned. Then came that fateful day in
Feb 91. The decom ceremony at Long Beach Naval Shipyard.
What a ceremony, one that will stay with me forever. A sad
and solomn crew stood on her decks for the last time Then
capt Tucker read the orders and it was done. We all walked
off the decks, said our goodbyes to all the friends we made
during aur tour on New Jersey. Then we all went on. You
could see everyone as they walked away, they would keep
looking back.
To this day, I can still remember almost everything about
my tour there. I cant imagine New Jersey didn't leave that
impression on everyone who stood on her decks, beautiful,
graceful and yet not to be rekoned with. This was NEW JERSEY
BB-62 THE MOST DECORATED SHIP IN THE NAVY..
I love the site keep it up. so many others should get
a little bit of what it was like to be a BATTLESHIP SAILOR.
thanks again. Boats

and I guess I have become much more nostalgic in trying
to track his Naval service.
Please send all info to:
LAE519@aol.com , and
I will answer all E:mails ASAP.
Thanks,

Gun shoots, and more gun shoots. GQ station was Sky 2,3,
and 4. I remember fire balls, and concussions from the 16's,
sharp stacatto barks from the 5's, and the sound only CIWS
can make. FA Div. from 84 to 86.

TERRIFIC JOB ON THE SITE. WHAT METHODS ARE USED TO LOCATE
SHIPMATES? I ASKED THIS OF SEVERAL IN THE PAST WITH NO REAL
ANSWER. WOULD IT BE PRACTICLE TO UTILIZE A SEARCH ORG. TO
FIND OUR OLD SHIPMATES. I'M SURE THEY DON'T KNOW THEY ARE
LOST. THERE WAS A COMRADERY ON THE NJ LIKE NO OTHER WITH
THE WW 2 CREW. WE SHOULD TRY TO NURTURE THAT BOND. WE ARE
DYING OFF AT AN ALARMING RATE, AS IT WAS ONCE SAID TEMPEST
FUGIT. HOW TRUE!!

Just a short note, (I hope) to all who read this. Obviously,
not every former crew member or current organization member
has an e-mail address. Behind our firewall, we have addresses
for everybody listed. In some cases we even have phone numbers.
If you are trying to contact an old friend/shipmate, who
does not have an e-mail address, let me know and we can
forward your message via snail mail. We won't give out that
person's address, without permission (yours either, for
that matter), but we will let him know you're looking to
communicate.

Looking forward to the time we can go on board the New
Jersey again, even if it is just to walk the main deck.
I remember watching North Korean shells flying over us when
my general quarters station was on the Air Control Forward
deck, O-11 level. What a feeling that was. My only wish
is that more members can be found from the 60's thru 80's
era to keep the memories alive.

Just a quick note to express my appreciation for all
of the comments. We're still working on the site and expect
it will be some time before we feel it's "finished". The
purpose of the site is to promote the USS NEW JERSEY and
the Veteran's Association. To remind people of the contribution
of this and the other battleships to "peace" efforts, over
the past 50 years. Finally, to bring together all of the
former crew members to celebrate a very special time in
our lives. If you have photos, stories, questions or needs,
just let us know. We appreciate the help and the opportunity
to help.

A suggestion. Recently I talked with a guy that was on
the uss missouri. He said that when they replaced the teak
deck they cut the old deck into sections about 12 inches
long, sanded them to bring out the color, inscribed them
with the Navy Seal, put on the ship's name and the words
"Plank Owner" Assigned before her first commissioning I,
as other crew, became "Plank Owners". I would like to have
a Plack showing "Plank Owner" He said these had to be purchased
by individuals to off-set the cost. Jack McDonald QM 2/c

A story. I was assigned to the New Jersey April of 1943
one month before commissioning. Work on her was still going
on around the clock. Coming back from liberty one evening
I saw the Chief Gunner standing on the dock next to the
16 in. turrets. They hadn't been put on yet. He had hash
marks to the elbow. I asked him how accurate were the guns?
He said " If there was a guy out there at 27 miles and you
told me to hit him in the eye, I could ask you which eye.
There are many stories like this one that should be put
into print or they'll soon be gone forever.

I was privileged to serve in the USS NEW JERSEY during
the Vietnam era. 1967 through 1969. It was a wonderful tour,
probably the most remembered of my 30 years. I would certainly
like to hear from anyone who served during that period.
My email address is:

it will improve as time goes on. Many thanks to those responsible.
